Activity 3.6 - Sample Introductory Paragraph
Completion requirements
The influence of the spice trade and salt mining in the history of human commerce is well documented. The Great Wall of China is a fine tourist attraction and historical site but it no longer serves its original economic or cultural purpose. Globalization as a process connects various nations, economies, and cultures in a manner not previously possible. As with most new events, the economic and cultural ramifications of the process are being argued.
Read the introductory paragraph above and answer the questions which follow:
If you had received this paper from this student, what would you say is the topic and focus of the rest of the paper?
- What is the connection between spices/salt and globalization?
- Why is the Great Wall of China mentioned?
- What are the subtopics in the paper going to be?
- The last sentence (which should be the thesis statement guiding the entire paper) is vague. What will the paper really try to prove?
