Lesson topic and staging

This lesson looks at the global health problem, hypertension related to the amount of salt intake. Students read a text about the impact of excessive use of salt on our health and focus on vocabulary taken from the text. Next, students test their knowledge of English idioms based on health. Finally, students discuss the topic of National Health Service, make an attempt to write a brochure for people with hypertension and design a campaign to convince manufacturers and supermarkets to reduce salt contents of their products. Supplementary texts on Hunting and Comprehensive Lifestyle Changes give students the opportunity to extend their vocabulary.

By the end of the lesson, students should have:

- extracted specific information and language items from reading texts and a listening exercise

- extended their range of vocabulary related to health and lifestyle changes

- extended their range of idiomatic expressions connected with health

- discussed the topic of National Health Service and alternative therapies (Chinese Medicine)

- written a brochure for people with hypertension

- designed a campaign to convince manufacturers and supermarkets to reduce salt contents of their products.
