Lesson topic and staging

This lesson looks at animals with a specific focus on endangered species of exotic animals. Students read a report about illegal global wildlife trade via internet and extend their vocabulary by matching synonyms and phrases from the text to their corresponding equivalents. Then students discuss different questions related to threatened species and in the role play they talk about the problem of exotic animal and animal products black market. Students brainstorm reasons why any use of animals is unfair. Next, students identify idiomatic expressions in a short text and elicit their meanings. Students do a quiz to complete sentences with animal sounds. Finally, students practice animal related vocabulary in a listening exercise.

By the end of the lesson, students should have:

- extracted specific information and language items from reading texts and a listening exercise

- extended their range of vocabulary related to animals

- extended their range of idiomatic expressions connected with animals

- used the language focus of the lesson to participate in a speaking practice activity

- discussed the topic of endangered exotic animals and the problem of animal farming
