1. Personally, I like sunny beaches and lots of sand and blue sea but the Icehotel is exactly what it says it is – a hotel made out of ice. Opened in 1990, 30,000 tons of snow and 10,000 tons of crystal clear ice are used every year to keep the happy hotel guests freezing cold. Admittedly, a choice of conventional rooms is also offered so there is no reason why you need to freeze in your own room. In addition, the hotel offers other great events such as safari trips out onto the ice on snowmobiles, fabulous examples of ice art and there is a church made entirely out of ice. Unfortunately the ice part of the hotel is closed in the summer – it doesn´t exist then! The hotel is really good value for Money, but only if you like being cold.
2. Over the last twenty or thirty years the African tourist industry has started living up to its potential, and Ngong House is now being promoted as the number one hotel throughout the continent. At first glance, however, you might want to think again. There is no hotel, really. There is a collection of tree houses, and from outside these houses made of local wood do not look very inviting. The reality though is that inside the rooms are really elegant and the visitor is treated to a holiday of luxury. The location is also magnificient and it is an experience of a lifetime to see the sunset over the Ngong Hills. You are also within an hour´s drive of two of the best safari parks in the world. All this and more for £150 a night.
3. The town of Coober Pedy in Australia is famous for its opal, the valuable white stone that is mined here. As it is so hot in this part of the world, it is no surprise that many people live underground. So, it´s not so strange to find that there is an underground hotel there too – the Desert Cave hotel. The visitor is given the choice of staying underground or above ground but this really is no choice at all as the only really special thing about Coober Pedy (apart from the opal) is the opportunity to stay underground. The visitors´ book is full of people saying they had a beautiful sleep in these underground rooms and I have to agree with them. It´s also not just the rooms that are underground. There are shops, a café, an interactive centre about opal, which is being renovated at the moment, and a games room. All underground. You have to ask yourself if there is any reason to go above ground. And that´s the problem. Unless you are interested in opal, there really isn´t much else to do above ground. The brochure states that more activities will be introduced in the next year but until then, it´s a long way to go to get a good night´s sleep.
