Researchers of human motivation describe two generic types of motivation: extrinsic and intrinsic. According to Ryan and Deci (2002), “Intrinsic motivation remains an important construct, reflecting the natural human propensity to learn and assimilate. However, extrinsic motivation is argued to vary considerably in its relative autonomy and thus can either reflect external control or true self-regulation.” Furthermore, Spaulding (1992) compares these two types of motivation by pointing out that people motivated intrinsically want to succeed regardless the external value of the task accomplished. In brief, both of these types of motivation are important for being successful, even though the intrinsic motivation is more stable. This inner motivation, therefore, is of higher value for learning.
