Reading (part II): Inside an egg
Inside an egg
At the centre of an egg there is the yolk, the young bird`s food supply. The yolk is held in the middle of the egg by two twisted cords made of protein, called the chalazae. When the parent bird rolls the egg during incubation (to warm up evenly), the chalazae move the yolk back to its original position, keeping the developing chick on top. The white of the egg, or albumen, contains water reserves for the chick. In this diagram, the egg is shown from above.
